The Alters: Last Variable Costs Extra on Game Pass
Xbox Game Pass subscribers can play The Alters without buying the base game, but that access stops at Last Variable. The July 13 story expansion is listed as separate paid DLC, and Microsoft's current store pages do not include it with the subscription.
Game Pass includes the base game, not Last Variable
The confusion is easy to understand. The Alters remains available through Game Pass, while Last Variable continues a major story thread from the same game. That does not make the expansion part of the subscription.
The official Xbox Store listing for Last Variable labels it as downloadable content that requires a game sold separately. The page connects the DLC to the Game Pass version of The Alters, which means the subscription can satisfy the base-game requirement. It does not grant the add-on itself.
For Game Pass players, the practical result is simple: the subscription provides the game needed to run Last Variable, but the expansion must still be purchased.
The Deluxe Edition Upgrade is the confirmed Xbox route
Microsoft currently sells The Alters Deluxe Edition Upgrade for US$14.49. Its description specifically says it is for people who already have access to the base game separately, and the package includes:
- The Alters: Last Variable
- Deluxe Outfits
- The original soundtrack
That wording makes the upgrade a clear option for Game Pass subscribers. It also exposes the ownership detail that matters later. If The Alters leaves Game Pass, or a player's subscription ends, owning the DLC alone will not replace the required base game. The player would need to buy The Alters before using the expansion again.
A separate Last Variable product page also exists on Xbox and Steam, but the standalone price was not visible when this article was checked. Players should compare the standalone DLC with the US$14.49 Deluxe Edition Upgrade once both purchase options are live in their region.
Last Variable arrives July 13 with a new scientific crew
Steam lists The Alters: Last Variable for July 13, 2026. Release timing can vary by platform and region, so the store page may still show a countdown even after the calendar reaches July 13 elsewhere.
11 bit studios describes the expansion as an approximately 20-hour continuation of the ending in which Jan Scientist stays behind on the planet to study the Oasis. His new crew is made entirely from more specialized versions of himself, including a Geologist, Biologist, Chemist and Physicist.
The new campaign shifts the survival loop toward scientific research and terraforming. Players will build underground, use cryosleep to survive years-long planetary cycles and watch the surface change between periods of exploration. The expansion is planned for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
The ending-save question still needs a firm answer
The official store descriptions confirm which ending Last Variable follows, but they do not currently explain whether players must import a completed save or can start the expansion directly from the menu.
That distinction matters for anyone who finished The Alters on another platform or chose a different outcome for Jan Scientist. Until the expansion unlocks or 11 bit studios adds a direct access note, players should not assume they need to replay the base campaign.
What is confirmed is narrower and more useful: Game Pass covers the required base game, not Last Variable. The expansion costs extra, and continued access will still depend on owning The Alters or keeping an eligible Game Pass subscription active.
