Was Evy’s Mother Dead in Undertone? [Spoilers]
I just finished watching Undertone, and Mama’s neat, empty bed near the end made me question all the earlier caregiving scenes. Evy speaks as if her mother is already dead during the final podcast call, but the movie never tells us when she died.
I think Mama was alive during most of the story and died close to the final podcast. Still, the empty bed, the possible urn and the changed state of the house leave room for a darker idea: Mama may have been dead for much longer, while Evy kept seeing and caring for her inside her own mind.
Was Mama Already Dead?
Mama appears to be dead by the time Evy and Justin take the final live calls.
While trying to calm Abby, Evy says, “I killed my mother.” She explains that Mama used to pray beside her bed every night. When Mama became seriously ill, she asked Evy to pray with her, but Evy kept saying she was too busy or tired.
Mama later stopped eating and talking, and Evy felt that she had left it too late. Her words show that she blames herself for losing her mother, even though Mama was already seriously ill.
This does not mean Evy physically killed her. She feels responsible because she refused the one thing Mama kept asking from her.
The harder question is how long Mama had been dead.
The movie does not give a clear date or show her death directly. Mama could have died shortly before the final podcast, with Evy still struggling to accept it. She could also have died before some of the caregiving scenes we watched.
There is no clear proof that she was dead from the opening scene. That idea comes mainly from what Evy sees when she finally goes upstairs.
The Empty Bed Is the Biggest Clue
Mama’s bed looks neat and empty during the final trip through the house. Evy then sees Mama standing in the bathroom instead of lying where she had spent most of the story.
The made bed feels important because it does not look like someone had recently been sleeping or dying in it. It looks as if the room had already been cleared.
This supports the idea that Mama died earlier and Evy kept imagining her in the bed. The drawings covering the house may also show its real state after Evy’s mind can no longer hide what happened.
Some viewers also point to a vase-like object on the mantle and believe it is Mama’s urn. If that is true, Mama may have died before the story started. The movie never identifies the object, though, so it cannot be used as firm proof.
There is also a simpler explanation for the bed.
Mama may have died shortly before the live podcast. Abyzou could then have moved her body, taken control of it or appeared in her form inside the bathroom. Under that explanation, the earlier care scenes really happened.
The death rattle connects both ideas. Evy spends much of the story listening for changes in Mama’s breathing. Director Ian Tuason said the death rattle was the main inspiration for the movie’s disturbing sounds.
This makes Mama’s final breathing more than a sign of illness. It also becomes part of the sound that leads Evy toward Abyzou.
Justin and the Podcast Were Probably Real
The theory that Mama died earlier does not mean Justin and the whole podcast were fake.
Justin knows Evy well, and their early conversations sound like two friends who have worked together for some time. Tuason also said Adam DiMarco spoke live to Nina Kiri through her headphones while they filmed the podcast scenes. He wanted their relationship to feel closer before everything went wrong.
That makes Justin more likely to be a real person, not someone Evy created.
Some viewers believe the podcast equipment disappears when the house changes. However, another viewer who checked the scene again said part of the microphone can still be seen after the equipment has been pushed back and covered by drawings.
The missing-equipment idea is not strong enough to prove that the podcast never happened.
Evy can still be seeing parts of the house incorrectly. She can also hear changed voices or words through the recordings. Tuason said he wanted some subtitles to show something different from what Evy hears, so the movie does tell us that her audio cannot always be trusted.
In a Reddit AMA, director Ian Tuason said Evy’s mental collapse prepared the ground, saying Abyzou’s name opened the door, and listening to all ten recordings invited her inside. His answer suggests that Evy’s mental state and the demon both play a part.
So, was Evy’s mother already dead?
Mama was most likely dead by the final live call, but the movie does not prove that she had been dead through the full story. I think she was alive during most of Evy’s care scenes and died close to the final podcast.
The neat bed keeps the earlier-death theory alive. It may show that Evy had been hiding Mama’s death from herself for longer than we knew.
The last scene works both ways. Evy could be facing a possessed Mama, or her mind could finally be showing her the mother she had already lost.
